CSO winds down season with 'magnificent sonority' Brahms: Symphony #4
by Chuck Klaus
It is the finale that is the capstone to the entire work, and here Segal and the CSO gave a strong, passionate and meaningful account of a movement that falls flat in many performances.
The variety and power that Brahms is able to achieve in some 34 variations on this eight-note theme are staggering. Segal and the CSO achieved a comprehension here that few interpreters have been able to match, and an appreciative audience gave the performance a warm reception.
